Donating Vaccines to the World
Any global campaign to improve health needs immunization as a cornerstone. That is why Merck this year began a donation program second in size only to the project for Mectizan. This new donation consists of 5 million doses of our hepatitis B vaccine, Recombivax HB, to be delivered over five years. Merck is working with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) to identify the countries that will benefit most from this donation. Hepatitis B vaccine is one of three diseases targeted by GAVI to close the disparity between vaccination rates in the developed and the developing world.
The Merck Medical Outreach Program donates thousands of pharmaceuticals and doses of vaccines for use in on-going humanitarian programs throughout the developing world and in support of major disaster relief efforts in the United States and abroad. Donations of Merck products (with the exception of Mectizan) go primarily through four organizations: Catholic Medical Mission Board, Interchurch Medical Assistance, MAP International and Project HOPE. Each has a long-standing relationship with Merck and assures us that Merck products will be securely warehoused and will not be diverted, mishandled or misappropriated.
