A New Package Deal in Ophthalmics
The ophthalmic dispenser vials, Ocumeter Plus, rolling relentlessly off the lines at our plant in Mirabel, France, represent years of intense work. We believe that convenience and ease of use help improve customer compliance, leading to better therapeutic value. That is why our ophthalmic marketing team interviewed hundreds of patients to see what they wanted in a new, improved container. What they wanted was a dispenser large enough for easy gripping, especially for elderly hands, that also produced a single drop of medication with gentle squeezing.
Manufacturing packaging technology engineer, Art Lifshey, working with the findings from Mercks extensive market research, developed a totally new, patented, ophthalmic package that incorporates the desirable patient features. Combining todays most advanced computer based engineering tools, with hands-on model building and prototypes in his extensive home workshop, Mr. Lifshey successfully turned patient and marketing needs into what is now the final product. The result is what rolls off those Mirabel lines today: a deceptively simple-looking bottle that is easy to use, but meets the manufacturing divisions high standards of reliability, quality and efficiency.

Mr. Lifshey embodies the best of what we expect from those who work for Merck - talent, creativity and dedication. Mr. Lifshey spent much of his childhood in the basement of his parents home building gadgets, experimenting with electricity or assembling something leaving to play games like baseball only under protest. His father used to say that if the house blows up, Ill know Arthurs in the basement. Luckily for Merck and users of our ophthalmic products, that basement never blew.
